Amazon Leo is a satellite internet service built around a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit, roughly 590 kilometres above the planet, far closer than traditional geostationary satellites at more than 35,000 kilometres. That shorter distance is designed to support lower latency for everyday activities such as video calls, streaming, remote work and online learning.
The network was originally developed under the name Project Kuiper. In November 2025, Amazon rebranded Project Kuiper as Amazon Leo. The service is intended to extend reliable, high-speed internet to people and organisations beyond the reach of existing fibre, fixed wireless and mobile networks, which is directly relevant to many rural and underserved parts of Kenya.

Millions of Kenyans live where running fibre is expensive and where 4G or 5G coverage is weak or absent. Business Satellite Internet KenyaAs of now, Amazon Leo has not announced commercial availability in Kenya. Amazon is still building out its satellite constellation and has begun early service in selected regions as it adds coverage and capacity.
Amazon's first announced consumer satellite internet agreement in Africa is with Herotel in South Africa, where a service called “evry” is expected to launch commercially in 2027. Amazon is also working with Vanu to provide rural connectivity and cellular backhaul across the continent, starting in South Africa. No Kenya launch date or partner has been confirmed.
